  1. Figure and ground are terms first brought into 
  2. play about 1915 to assist the structural study of 
  3. visible phenomena. Objects tend to either 
  4. advance into foreground and become prominent 
  5. or recede into background and become ignored or 
  6. lost. This is termed figure/ground situation. 
  7. Consciously noted elements are figure and 
  8. everything else is ground.
