Figure and ground are terms first brought into
play about 1915 to assist the structural study of
visible phenomena. Objects tend to either
advance into foreground and become prominent
or recede into background and become ignored or
lost. This is termed figure/ground situation.
Consciously noted elements are figure and
everything else is ground.
The interplay between figure and ground is where
the action is. This interplay is an interval or a gap,
like the space between the wheel and the axle.
